The Biggest Mistake in Website Design

I see it every day.  There are so many websites that make this critical website design error and it is costing them thousands, if not tens of thousands in lost revenue and business.

Imagine going into a department store.  The store is beautiful.  All the best fixtures decorate the store.  All the best products are on the shelves.  You can’t believe what a great store you’ve found.  Now you want to buy something.  But!…. there’s no-one there to help you.  There aren’t any cashiers anywhere.  No one in the aisles either.  There’s only customers walking around and someone  has posted a “contact us” poster on the wall with a phone number.  This is crazy you think and leave.

No one would open a store like this, it doesn’t make sense.  However, I see it every day on business’ websites.  A beautifully designed website and they probably spent thousands of dollars with a branding expert choosing colours and logos.  They probably spent thousands more for a professionally shot YouTube video.  However, there’s no call to action!

What is the purpose of a website?  Either to 1) sell immediately (if you have an ecommerce site) or 2) to build a mailing list of clients that you can market to that will eventually become customers.  Why else would you have a website?  Unless it’s for vanity purposes, there is no other purpose, especially in business.  You need to drive leads to your site and convert them in customers.  That’s why you’re in business.  Good website design is critical to the success of your website.

Here are some website design tips to increase conversions on your website:

  1.  Have a reply device on every page if you can… “Learn more… Name:____________  email address:____________.  These web forms are easy to build and will email you the person’s contact info so you can add them to your database, or contact them, if that is the intent.
  2. Make an offer!  “Get a free white paper on web marketing by filling out the form below”
  3. Offer a subscription to your blog.  “Sign up here for a subscription”
  4. Design landing pages.  Landing pages are specifically designed with a single purpose:  to get visitors to convert.  Typically a very simple page with a great offer and a reply form.
  5. Conversion buttons.  “buy now” “get a free quote” “get a free analysis”, etc.  These buttons should direct to a landing page.
